We’ve officially settled into the dog days of summer, and as temperatures soar across the country, keeping cool is on everyone’s mind. Used outdoors, ceiling fans can significantly improve your air comfort, allowing you to spend more time enjoying the greener side of life. How do you choose an outdoor ceiling fan for your space? We’ll let our fan gurus answer that. Randys, take it away!
Dear Randy and Randy,
I want to install an outdoor ceiling fan on my covered patio, but I’m not sure if I should choose a damp location rated or wet location rated ceiling fan. What’s the difference?
Charlotte, El Paso, TX
That’s a great question and an important distinction to make. Our ceiling fans are tested and rated by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and given a rating of “Indoor,” “Damp” or “Wet.” Our damp location rated ceiling fans are suitable for use in covered outdoor areas where the fan is protected from direct contact with water. Wet location rated fans, on the other hand, may be installed in areas directly exposed to precipitation, where rain, water drips and splashes are likely to make contact with the housing. Rubber casings around pull chain ports, stainless steel hardware and galvanized coatings have been engineered in our wet rated ceiling fans so that water cannot penetrate the housing, ensuring that the fan motor and inner workings remain moisture-free.
However, there’s more than just a housing difference between damp and wet rated fans; wet rated fans are required to have ABS plastic blades, whereas damp and indoor fans may have plastic blades but they are not required.
Our damp and wet rated ceiling fans come in many different styles and finishes that are designed for use in varying weather conditions, however, one of our finishes—Brushed Steel—is only recommended for use in indoor areas fully protected from precipitation, since the finish is prone to rust when exposed to water.
We hope that answers your question! Explore our diverse collection of Indoor/Outdoor fans here to find the perfect fit for your outdoor space.
